Arena events top off the National Festival of the West with the pageantry of the Grand Entry and the action of the Cowboy Mounted Shooters.
Grand Entry:
A feature of the Festival of the
West, this event gives a unique overview of the entire
celebration. From the wild and wooly cowboy mounted shooters to
the glitz and glitter of the Western Glory Drill Team, the Grand Entry
is colorful pageantry. Western groups and invited to join in the
fun. Call for entry information.
Cowboy Mounted Shooting:
Cowboys and cowgirls vie for prizes
and the Grand American Championship titles in this exciting
competition. This crowd pleasing event features contestants dressed in
authentic frontier-style garb, mounted on horseback, galloping at
breakneck speed and shooting (with blanks) at balloon targets. A
rigorous test of a rider's skill in controlling a speeding horse,
reining the mount into sharp turns, and shooting out
balloon targets with specially made blank bullets provides spectators
with
heart-in-mouth excitement. "It's the closet thing you can do to live
adventure
you might have experienced in the Old West," says competitor Jim
Rodgers.
